riginally written for cello and piano. The first performance was given by Sasha von Dassow in 2013 in Friday Harbor, Washington. Sarah Hall gave the first violin performance 2017.
This piece was completed in 2013, as I was grappling one of the biggest mistakes of my life. To sooth myself, I often improvisd at the piano. One of those improvisations turned into the opening piano riff of "a short treatise on forgiveness." With tears rolling down my face, the cello part came quickly and easily.
The music temporarily allayed my distress. However, real healing came years later, after more appropriate choices set me off on a better life. I hope that performing or listening to this work will inspire others to forgive themselves for past errors, even as they develop the determination and discernment to make wise choices.
