On the surface, it is a trio based around the image of a pagan ritual occuring at the setting of the sun and the rising of the moon, full of life, dance, reverence, and mystery. On a deeper, more personal level, it is a piece about new beginnings. Ricucci-Hill wrote the piece for the Zodiac Music Academy and Festival in Valdeblore, France which was their first international performance as well as their first music festival. Upon returning, the piece was revised utilizing the knowledge and experience gained from the festival, which foresaw a shift in their compositional voice. Forest Rituals was awarded 3rd in the 2017 Abundant Silence Composition Competition.

Aaryn S. Part of the proposal suggested music that celebrated the rich musical heritage of the Northwest. In looking around at what that meant, I discovered a curious fact about Boise: it has the only Basque heritage museum in the country. Suddenly the wheels got to turning!

Basquing (2022) seeks to invoke... bask, if one will, in the sounds and feelings of another time and place. The inspiration of the piece comes from the Basque region of France with quotations from folksong, fiddle music, and a general vibe of French impressionism.

The piece opens with the folksong Atzo Goizean, the lyrics to which invoke the folksy elements of village living (talking about waking to the thrush’s song, fathers arranging marriages, etc.). The urge to ‘word paint’ the folk song with it references to thrushes and partridges, is tempting, but the urge was avoided in this case, instead opting for a general “vibe”, or feeling. The next section avoids quotation altogether, instead opting to steep into the mystique environment created before. The last major portion of the piece utilizes what was billed (to me at least) as a Basque fiddle tune (the title lost as it seems the scholarly research on the subject and tunes that comprise the genre are lacking even by those who claim to have some knowledge of it). Assuming the best, however, the fiddle tune quoted in Basquing is meant to be a musical representation of familial resemblance to the fiddle music of the Pacific Northwest and how folk music of all varieties is at one time so specific yet at the same time broad in its understanding across cultures.

Commissioned in 2022 by Arthur Houle (pianist) and Joung Hoon Song (violinist) for the Pacific Northwest College Music Society Conference 2023 in Boise, ID and premiered at said conference on March 17th, 2023.

Aaryn S. Idiomatically written – both in terms of style and technique – it is kept in a concise rhapsodic one-movement form and offers a well-balanced and contrasting display of drama, lyricism, and virtuosity. Magic and magical imagery have always been a part of queer imagery and culture, whether in the adoption of the mythical fairy as a sort of mascot or through the witch trials of the Lavender Scare, or the witch-like powers of seduction gay man in particular were said to have had over the sons of suburbanites. The original pride flag even included a stripe which stood for magic: turquoise. Queer people have always found a keen way to take something ordinary, and by imparting their own brand of spell-casting, transfigure it into a thing that is new, spectacular, and compelling. The idea of this piece is meant to capture even just a bit of that glamour by surprise; sprinkled with hidden musical incantations and riddles, helping to craft a brew of queer tinted elixir that one may become intoxicated by.

Queer Turquoise was commissioned as part of the I Exist Project by saxophonist Nick May, to be a part of a multi- volume album of music for saxophone by queer composers.

Note: A version for single piano is also available.

Aaryn S.
